FAQs
The peak of the Maasai Mara Wildebeest Migration typically occurs between July and October, when over 1.5 million wildebeests, along with zebras and gazelles, move from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya. This is the best time to witness dramatic river crossings at the Mara River, where the herds face crocodile-infested waters and predators such as lions and cheetahs. Booking your 3-day mid-range safari during these months ensures you experience the migration at its most intense and breathtaking moments.
A mid-range Maasai Mara Wildebeest Migration safari typically includes transportation from Nairobi in a comfortable 4×4 safari vehicle or tour van, accommodation in a mid-range lodge or tented camp, guided game drives, park entrance fees, and meals. Some packages may also include optional activities like Maasai village visits or hot air balloon safaris at an additional cost. Mid-range accommodations offer a balance between comfort and affordability, with en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, and good dining options.
A 3-day mid-range Maasai Mara Wildebeest Migration safari typically includes at least four game drives. The first game drive occurs on the afternoon of arrival, followed by a full-day game drive on the second day, which maximizes your chances of witnessing the migration. The final game drive happens on the morning of the third day before returning to Nairobi. Some itineraries may offer an optional early morning game drive on the second or third day for a chance to see predators in action during their most active hours.
For a 3-day mid-range Maasai Mara Wildebeest Migration safari, pack lightweight clothing in neutral colors, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a good camera with extra batteries and memory cards. Since temperatures can drop in the mornings and evenings, carrying a warm jacket or fleece is essential. Binoculars are also recommended to enhance wildlife viewing. If you’re visiting during the migration peak, insect repellent and a small first-aid kit can also be useful.
