FAQs
The most appropriate period to visit Amboseli, Lake Naivasha, and Mara for a 6-day trip is in the dry seasons which include June to October and December to February. Its during these months that wildlife can be easily sighted given that most of them congregate around water points while the tracks in the parks are manageable. This crossing normally occurs from July to October, giving a breathtaking view of wildebeests crossing the Mara River in the Maasai Mara. Amboseli is probably also best approached during the dry season for even better looks at Mount Kilimanjaro. Lake Naivasha is a year round destination although bird watching is best done between November to April as it will be wetter.
One of the most famous park features of Amboseli are large herds of elephants, photographed against the background of Mount Kilimanjaro. The tanganyika Serengeti is also home to other wild animals such as lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras and so many types of birds. During a boat ride in Lake Naivasha tourists can also see hippos in water and different types of birds including fish eagles and kingfishers on the banks, and other land animals including giraffes and antelopes in the Crescent Island Game Sanctuary. Some of the famous animals found in Maasai Mara are lions, African elephants, Cape Buffaloes, leopards, rhino, cheetahs, hyenas, wildebeests, and various types of antelopes. If you plan to visit this region during July to October, there are chances to see masses of wildebeests migrating from one point to another.
Midrange scheduled 6 days and 5 nights usually involve midrange accommodation in lodges or tented camp with all the necessary facilities in the savanah destinations like Amboseli national park lake Naivasha and mara. In Amboseli, lodges may give you glimpses of Mt Kilimanjaro and facilities like en-suite bathrooms, hot showers and alt sometimes swimming pools. In Lake Naivasha, some of the activities include accommodation in lodges by the side of the lake and boat rides. In the Maasai Mara, mid-range tented camps offer large tents that are furnished with beds, have private bathrooms and a dining area. These can be described as giving you the best of both worlds, comfort and the wild, all within close proximity .
The safari involves game drives in Amboseli National Park which has elephants, predators and the magnificent Kilimanjaro views. When in Lake Naivasha, one can take a boat ride to see hippos and birds, and on Crescent Island, get another taste of the wild by an escorted walking safari. The Maasai Mara is all about game drives where visitors can come face to face with the residents’ hunters and if the timing is right, can catch a glimpse of wild beasts on their annual migration. Extra and special interest activities may entail an aerial view of the Maasai Mara by balloon safari, or encounter with the Maasai people by visiting their genuine cultural village.
Most of the transport used for the 6 days’ tour to Amboseli, Lake Naivasha, and Mara is hired from well-equipped 4X4 station-wagons like the land cruisers or safari van. These vehicles are specifically intended for game viewing purpose and have a pop-up roof to enable better viewing of wildlife. A Kenya road trip that will take you through a scenic drive from Nairobi to Amboseli, then to Lake Naivasha, and to the Maasai Mara. These are self driven but accompanied by experienced safari guides who explain to visitors about the wildlife and the surrounding environment. For those planning to move around with lesser time, a domestic flight between Mara and Nairobi can also be organized at an extra charge.
When planning for a 6-day trip to Amboseli, Lake Naivasha and Mara, one should select light and loose-fitting clothes that are in a natural shade of colouration. Wear comfortable shoes for walking and you may need a hat and sunglasses against the sun. You may need a jacket or fleece during the early morning and evening game drive sessions as the evening can get cold. Other necessities may include binoculars, camera with extra batteries, insect repellent, sun block Cream, and any other prescribed medicines. When traveling in the wet season, it is recommended to carry an umbrella and pack your accessories in a waterproof bag. A small bag, which maintains the theme, is handy when carrying items for use during the game drive and other physical activities.
