4-Day Mikumi & Udzungwa Treks- The Plain to Peak

Your guide will meet you in Dar es Salaam to begin your private safari adventure in Southern Tanzania.

We will leave the bustling city behind and drive west, then south-west, to reach Mikumi National Park in the Morogoro Region. This afternoon, we will arrive at our first lodge, located just outside Mikumi National Park. Take some time to settle in and enjoy the rest of the day relaxing by the pool.

On the second day, we wake up bright and early for a full day of game viewing in Mikumi National Park. We explore the park in our 4x4 safari vehicle, which has a pop-up roof for better wildlife spotting and photography.

Mikumi covers approximately 3,230km² (1,247mi²) of wilderness. During our adventure, we commonly see elephants, buffalo, zebras, and wildebeests, as well as various species of antelope, including impalas, kudus, hartebeests and eland. Other animals to look out for in Mikumi include lions, giraffes, hippos, hyenas, wild dogs, warthogs, baboons and more. After an exciting day of wildlife viewing, we return to our lodge.

Today, we will take a short drive to Udzungwa Mountains National Park. After settling into our lodge, which borders the park, we will hike up to the Sanje Waterfalls. This stunning waterfall consists of three sections, with heights of 30m (100ft), 70m (230ft) and 170m (560ft). Our trek will take us through dense forests, as much of the park is characterized by tropical and mountain forests, along with woodlands, grasslands and steppe habitats.

Udzungwa is home to over 400 bird species, so birdwatchers should keep a keen eye out. We may also encounter primates such as baboons and vervet monkeys, as well as rare species, including the endemic Iringa red colobus and the Sanje crested mangabey. Additionally, we might spot endemic amphibians, reptiles and butterflies. The park boasts approximately 2,500 plant species within its 1,990km² (770mi²) area, with a quarter of these being endemic species.

After breakfast on the fourth day of our Southern Tanzania safari, we set out for a morning walk in the diverse forest.

Later, it is time to pack up and head back to coastal Dar es Salaam, where our African adventure began.
