The Great Migration Safari refers to a wildlife experience where travelers witness millions of wildebeest, zebras, and other herbivores moving across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. It is considered one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring natural events on Earth.
The migration happens year-round, but the best time depends on what you want to see:
- January – March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti.
- July – October: River crossings at the Grumeti and Mara Rivers—most dramatic and popular time.
- November – December: The herds move back south through the Serengeti.
The stars are the wildebeest (over 1.5 million), accompanied by zebras, gazelles, and eland. Predators like lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and crocodiles follow the herds, creating thrilling predator-prey encounters.
The Mara River, which lies between the Serengeti (Tanzania) and Maasai Mara (Kenya), is the most famous spot for dramatic river crossings, typically between July and October. Crocodile attacks and fast currents make it an intense viewing opportunity.
Visitors can choose from a range of safari experiences:
- Luxury lodges and mobile tented camps that move with the herds.
- Hot air balloon safaris for a bird’s-eye view.
- Game drives with expert guides.
- Photographic safaris for wildlife enthusiasts.
