Upon arrival at Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo, you will be greeted by an English-speaking guide who will escort you to Maison Gallieni, your hotel nestled in Tana's upper town. This colonial mansion has been elegantly renovated, seamlessly blending modern and traditional designs. After a refreshing swim in the pool to unwind from the flight, seize the chance to immerse yourself in the classic Indonesian ambiance that envelops Tana.
While your stay here is brief, you will revisit this destination during your journey. Therefore, it's advisable to take it easy today and acclimate after the international journey.
Following a satisfying breakfast, you'll embark on an eastward journey to the captivating Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, a lush rainforest haven. Encompassing the Perinet Special Reserve and Mantadia National Park, this area is renowned for its abundant population of indri lemurs, the largest living lemurs globally!
As you travel to Andasibe, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in local life, passing by picturesque rice fields, redbrick houses, and roadside stalls brimming with fresh fruits and vegetables.
Upon reaching Mantadia Lodge, where your two-night stay includes full board, you'll savor a delectable lunch. Post-lunch, you'll embark on a visit to a private reserve managed by the Mitsinjo NGO. This organization is dedicated to promoting reforestation, public education, and conservation awareness, while also overseeing Madagascar's inaugural amphibian captive-breeding center. Here, you'll encounter a remarkable array of wildlife and even partake in reforestation endeavors by planting indigenous species along the trail.
Start your day with a delightful 1.5-hour drive to the enchanting Mantadia National Park! Keep your eyes peeled for a variety of animals including the indri lemur, diademed sifaka, grey bamboo lemur, red-bellied lemur, and white ruffed lemur. While the trails may be more challenging than those in Perinet, they are rich in hidden treasures waiting to be discovered.
Your journey will provide numerous opportunities to spot rare mammals, reptiles, and birds such as the scaly ground roller, pitta-like ground roller, and breasted coua. Following a satisfying picnic by the Rianasoa Waterfall, you'll trek back to the vehicle for a leisurely return journey to the lodge.
But the excitement doesn't stop there! Tonight, you have the chance to embark on a night walk with a local guide to explore the nearby forest and encounter its fascinating inhabitants, including mouse lemurs, white-footed sportive lemurs, fat-tailed dwarf lemurs, and woolly lemurs.
Begin your day with a delightful breakfast before rendezvousing with your tour guide to embark on an adventure to Perinet Reserve, spanning 180 hectares. Here, you might catch a glimpse of the exquisite indri lemur, characterized by its black and white markings resembling a teddy bear's face and a nearly invisible tail. Interestingly, this lemur species cannot thrive in captivity, setting it apart from others.
Moreover, the reserve hosts 11 additional lemur species, including the grey bamboo lemur, common brown lemur, diademed sifaka, and the black and white ruffed lemur.
Birdwatchers will be delighted to spot endemic species such as the velvet asity, blue coua, and the Nuthatch vanga. The reserve is also home to a variety of reptiles, invertebrates, and orchid species. Following lunch in Andasibe, you'll journey back to Antananarivo, the capital city, where you'll spend the night at Maison Gallieni.
Following a delightful meal at Maison Gallieni, you'll be chauffeured to the airport for a three-hour flight westward to Morondava. Situated at the delta of the Morondava River and along the shores of the Mozambique Channel, Morondava boasts the former Sakalava kingdom and numerous intricately carved wooden royal tombs. These tombs, adorned with artistic representations of life and fertility, are a captivating sight for tourists.
Upon arrival at the Palissandre Côte Ouest Hotel, guests have the option to explore Morondava's attractions or simply enjoy a leisurely afternoon. Later in the evening, you'll embark on a roughly twenty-kilometer drive to witness the breathtaking sunset at the Avenue of the Baobabs, an iconic symbol of Madagascar.
Start your day by immersing yourself in the natural splendor of Kirindy Reserve, situated 50km northeast of Morondava. Renowned for its diverse wildlife, this area is famed as the prime location in Madagascar for observing fossas, along with being home to the Madagascar giant jumping rat and eight lemur species, including the Madame Berthe's mouse lemur.
Within the reserve's lush deciduous forest and towering baobab trees, hosting three of the island's seven baobab species, you'll encounter over 70 bird species, including the rare white-breasted mesite. After a day filled with fascinating discoveries, return to Morondava by car and retire to your hotel.
Upon your arrival, your designated guide will be there to greet you and accompany you to the airport for your return trip to Tana. Upon landing, another guide will be awaiting your arrival to escort you to Maison Gallieni, your accommodation for the duration of your stay. Whether you choose to unwind by the pool or venture out to explore the city, the afternoon is yours to enjoy. Your evening meals, featuring half board options, are included for tonight.
In the morning, your transfer to Ivato Airport will ensure a timely departure for your charter flight to Madagascar's north-west coast, where Anjajavy Le Lodge awaits. For the next three nights, you'll reside in a Seaview Villa with full board included. Set amidst 450 hectares of a nature reserve, the 25 duplex rosewood villas offer private decks with ocean views. The surroundings are rich in fauna, featuring lemurs, chameleons, malachite kingfishers, and hummingbirds.
As the sun sets, indulge in a night walk within the reserve, where encounters with Coquerel's sifakas, Grewcock's sportive lemurs, Tsingy tuft-tailed rats, Commerson's leaf-nosed bats, and even the elusive fossa, Madagascar's largest predator, are possible.
Begin your day with a captivating tour of the mesmerizing Chemin des Crabes, where an abundance of wildlife awaits, including majestic baobabs and the renowned hairy crab. Even if you're not an avid birdwatcher, you'll be entranced by the dazzling array of colors and shapes among the local avian population, from the vibrant red fody and Souimanga sunbird to the exotic paradise flycatcher and the distinctive sickle-billed vanga.
Moreover, this location offers prime opportunities to spot the regal Madagascar fish eagle, the elusive crested ibis, or the extraordinary Madagascar sacred ibis.
Towards the end of the excursion, delve into a small cave where you may uncover a fossilized lemur skull, peculiar stalactites, and even shark teeth. After concluding the exploration, return to the lodge for a leisurely yet unforgettable afternoon, complete with lunch.
This morning, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the ancient Giant's Causeway and King's Alley. As you meander through, you'll encounter surprising sights such as baobab trees, unique Tsingy Rock formations from Madagascar, and a variety of lemurs, including the Coquerel's sifaka. These lemurs typically live in family groups of up to 10 individuals and, while they are primarily adapted to life in the treetops, they occasionally come down to the ground.
Distinct from the famous Verreaux's sifaka from the south of Madagascar, known for its characteristic sideways dance, the Coquerel's sifaka moves more like a miniature kangaroo, bounding over the ground! Keep an eye out for common brown lemurs as well, which may be spotted roaming in the gardens and surrounding reserve. After this enriching exploration, return to the lodge for a delightful lunch and a tranquil afternoon.
Meet at the airstrip at 9:30 am for a morning flight to Tana via regularly scheduled charter. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by a representative from ExodusSafaris who will assist with the outbound flight procedures, marking the conclusion of the unforgettable Family Wildlife Adventure, memories of which are sure to endure indefinitely.
