In every twelve months, close to two million wildebeest, zebra and other antelope species congregate their young and commence their journey across the crocodile-laden Mara River in the awe-inspiring Maasai Mara National Reserve. The seasonal nature of their movements take them on a quest to discover fresh pastures and rainfall. This astonishing Great Migration is a sight like no other; no other migration involves such an abundant number of wildlife, except maybe butterflies and tiny birds.
At the break of dawn, you'll depart from camp with the hope of a full-day exploration into the enveloping beauty of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, renowned as Kenya's most celebrated wildlife sanctuary. Here, you can experience the diversity of local creatures including gazelle, impala, antelope, giraffe, elephant, buffalo and warthog, not to mention catch famed big cat species such as leopard, cheetah and lion.
Every year, an awe-inspiring event takes place in the Masai Mara Reserve; the annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra. Starting in late June, they come from the Serengeti plains and make their way across to the Tanzania border and soon thereafter, brave the Mara River. A game of survival awaits them, as predators lurk beneath its surface. Visitors to the reserve can take in this astounding phenomenon between July and August.
Viewers of this safari may also see foxes with large ears, jackals, and hyenas with spots. Hippopotamuses and crocodiles inhabit both the Mara and Talek rivers. 452 species of birds have been documented, including vultures, eagles, ostriches, cranes, storks, hamerkop, and various types of hornbills.
In the afternoon, why not consider an exhilarating hot air balloon safari or explore a traditional Masai village to gain insight into their nomadic way of life? Known for their incredible courage, the Masai have been living alongside fierce wildlife for generations.
When night falls, come back to camp and unwind on your own veranda. Go for a dip in the pool, catch a glimpse of the elephants from the lounge, or grab a beverage at the bar before dinner.
Start your morning in a unique way - enjoy a delicious breakfast before heading out on a wildebeest and zebra safari along the Mara River. Get an even better view of the animals in the Serengeti plains on a hot air balloon safari, or join your guide on a 4x4 vehicle safari trip to the park. Your guide will share knowledge about the migration of these two species and give you an up-close look at their fascinating behaviors.
Wildebeests' ability to cooperate as a unit is demonstrated by their swarm intelligence which allows them to overcome an obstacle as one. This is extraordinary considering their vulnerability in the wild. In order to survive, wildebeest must be able to adapt their behavior; for example, a newborn must be able to keep up with the movement of the herd within a few minutes or risk being left behind and susceptible to predators. This adaptation to the environment ensures the survival of the species.
The Mara River presents a perilous situation for creatures crossing it, for lurking beneath the surface are hungry crocodiles. An ambush awaits the herd, with their powerful jaws to grasp and drag animals underwater. Even more dangerous is the fact that these formidable reptiles can launch up to half of their own body length from the water to capture their victims. Even their tails can be employed as a secondary tool in their ferocious attacks.
Today, you will have the opportunity to relish the sight of the flowing river and the migratory creatures. To make the most out of this experience, you will navigate from one spot to another as you admire the view. As the sun sets, it's time to come back to camp for a delightful dinner and a comfortable night.
After a hearty breakfast, it's time to part ways with Kenya. You'll be transported to Nairobi Airport in order to reach your flight on schedule. With the goodbyes said and bags packed, you'll soon be on your journey back home.
