Best Safari Parks and Game Reserves Near Port Elizabeth

Africa is home to some of the most beautiful and diverse ecosystems on earth, but that doesn’t mean you can’t also find a great time in one of its many safari parks. The country has been known for its game reserves since explorers first set foot here centuries ago, but it’s only recently that more travelers are discovering these hidden gems. From watching lions stalk prey with their eyes closed (or open) to seeing rhinos up close and personal—and even meeting them yourself—there’s something for everyone at Port Elizabeth’s top safari parks.

Addo Elephant National Park.

Addo Elephant National Park is a protected area in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa that was first proclaimed as a game reserve in 1931 and is now a national park.

The park covers an area of 1,147 km². Its boundary consists of two large rivers: the Olifants River (which flows into Mozambique) to the northeast and Ladybrand Dam on its eastern boundary with Lesotho.

Amakhala Game Reserve.

Amakhala Game Reserve lies in the Eastern Cape, near Port Elizabeth. It’s home to the Big 5: elephants, rhinos, lions, and buffalos, as well as giraffes, zebras, and leopards.

The reserve is also home to many other mammals, such as cheetahs or jackals.

Pumba Private Game Reserve.

Pumba Private Game Reserve is a wildlife reserve in South Africa. It’s home to the Big Five, many other species of animals, and some endangered ones. Located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, this park has been one of our favorite places to visit for years because it has so much to offer:

  • A good view from the top of Table Mountain (the highest point on earth)
  • Accessible lodges with rooms from R1 900 per night (and sometimes even less) depending on what time you want to stay there
  • Activities like bird-watching or hiking through different terrains

Lalibela Game Reserve.

Lalibela Game Reserve is located in the Eastern Cape, near Port Elizabeth. The reserve offers a variety of activities, including horse riding and mountain bike riding. It is also home to several accommodation options.

The park has two main sections: the Upper Karoo section, which covers more than 1 500 hectares, and the Lower Karoo section, with about 700 hectares. It extends from Hantam down to the Cederberg Mountains along the eastern border of KwaZulu Natal province, where it borders Swaziland’s Ezulwini Valley, National Park.

Shamwari Game Reserve.

The Shamwari Game Reserve is an excellent choice to avoid crowds. Located in Port Elizabeth, the reserve is only 15 minutes away from the city center and offers visitors plenty of game-viewing opportunities. The reserve has been established to protect endangered species such as lions, rhinos, elephants, and other large mammals.

The park’s main attraction is its wildlife viewing area which features more than 100 animals, including giraffes, zebras, and hippos! Other activities in this area include guided walks along footpaths where guests can observe these majestic animals in their most relaxed state; there are also various campsites available for those who want to stay longer than just a few days at any point during their visit.

Schotia Safaris Private Game Reserve.

Schotia is a private game reserve near Port Elizabeth. The reserve is divided into three sections: the core, the wilderness, and the wilderness grasslands. The core section is home to animals like leopards, lions, and elephants, while in the wilderness area, there are emus and rhinos.

The park has an excellent selection of accommodations, including campsites with bathrooms or flush toilets, safari tents, and bungalows with kitchen facilities so you can cook your meals if you wish.
