You'll be picked from your hotel in Dar Es Salaam and taken to Julius Nyere Airport, where you'll then fly to Kigoma. On arrival, you'll be taken to your accommodation to enjoy a tasty meal before setting off on a tour of the area - to Ujiji and Kigoma - giving you the opportunity to experience real Tanzanian life as it's rarely seen by tourists.
After enjoying your breakfast, you'll be heading out to the nearby Sigunga village ready to embark on your boat transfer to the Mahale Mountains National Park. As you drift away from civilization and into the park, you'll feel as if you have arrived at the heart of Africa. Upon reaching your lodge for lunch, you'll have the rest of the day to relax around the pool, kick back and enjoy the beautiful serenity of the area, or join a guided forest walk.
Prepare yourself for the main event! Delicious breakfast will be served and afterwards a briefing will initiate your journey into the wilds of Mahale Mountains National Park. Trekking through the jungle, you won't have to exert too much effort, however you will get a bit of exercise. The chimpanzees that inhabit this area are not habituated, so you won't be able to get too close, yet you'll still have plenty of openings to take a gander at our closest living relatives in their natural habitat. You'll be able to see them swinging in the tree branches, feeding on the forest floor, and living their lives. Upon completion of the hike, you'll head back to your lodgings to cleanse up and relax.
This morning, you'll set off back into the wild to witness the chimpanzees of Mahale one final time. You must make haste as you need to be back at base before noon in order to depart for Kigoma. In the afternoon, when you reach your destination, you can then enjoy a peaceful break by the shoreline of Lake Tanganyika.
Today marks the end of your journey in the untamed lands of southern Tanzania, as you take off from Dar Es Salaam. Say goodbye to the wild and get ready for a return to reality.
