Overview
The Debre Libanos Monastery, founded in 1284 by Abuna Tekle Haymanot, has been a major center of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church for almost five centuries. The monastery’s head, known as the Ichege, holds the position of second in authority within the entire church. Tekle Haymanot was an influential religious and political leader who played a key role in promoting Christianity across the region and supporting the revival of the Solomonic dynasty.
