During the legendary migration periods, the southern plains of the Serengeti are home to approximately 1.7 million wildebeest, more than 800,000 zebras and 200,000 Thomson gazelles. The migration uses the land as a calving ground due to the high calcium and potassium level in the plains, which are essential for milk production.
