Upon your arrival in Malawi, your guide will extend a warm welcome and accompany you on a private transfer southwest of Blantyre to Fisherman's Rest. Nestled on a sprawling 500-acre oasis in the Great Rift Valley, this family-operated nature reserve has been an integral part of the community since 1997. The accommodations are cozy, and guests can relish a pool offering breathtaking views of the valley.
At Fisherman's Rest, the mission is centered on enhancing education, economic opportunities, and overall quality of life in the surrounding areas. Guests have the opportunity to engage in various projects such as tree planting, repairing water pumps, or assisting in classroom construction.
You'll spend the next two nights here, with the specific project to be undertaken determined by the current needs of the community.
After waking up refreshed from a leisurely morning and enjoying breakfast, you'll be picked up for your private transfer to Mulanje, a journey that typically takes about 2 hours. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Mulanje, Likhubula Lodge is a charming old colonial property known for its inviting atmosphere and warm hospitality. It serves as an ideal overnight stop before embarking on a 3-day trek up the mountain.
This afternoon, you might opt for a short stroll to the nearby waterfall or simply relax to conserve your energy. Later, indulge in a delicious home-cooked dinner and treat yourself to a cold sundowner on the balcony overlooking the lush tea plantations, before settling in for a restful night.
Following a hearty breakfast at Likhubula Lodge, you'll embark on a four-day trek spanning 46 kilometers. Along the way, you'll traverse tunnels, meander under waterfalls, take refreshing dips in mountain streams, and revel in the stunning vistas of southern Malawi. This mountain is nestled within the protected Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve, overseen by the Malawi Mountain Club and Forestry Department.
Accommodation throughout the hike will be in rustic mountain huts devoid of electricity, allowing you to reconnect with nature. Meals will be prepared over open fires, and evenings will be illuminated by candles, with bucket showers available.
Each day on the trail begins with a steaming cup of coffee, a hearty bowl of oat porridge, and eggs on toast. Following your hearty morning meal, bid farewell to Zomba Forest Lodge and prepare for a 2.5-hour transfer to Liwonde National Park. Upon arrival, you'll embark on a boat journey to Mvuu Camp, where your en suite safari chalet awaits for the next two nights.
In between thrilling safari adventures, unwind by the pool or delve into the local culture with visits to neighboring communities. Your guide or lodge manager will be happy to assist in arranging these experiences.
This morning, following your morning activities and a satisfying breakfast, you'll be picked up from Cape Maclear for a scenic two and a half-hour drive. Upon reaching the Kayak Africa House, you'll have some time to unwind before embarking on a dhow trip across Lake Malawi, departing at 15:00. After just an hour's journey, you'll arrive at a secluded white sandy beach adorned with six en suite reed tents, a restaurant, bar, and lounge.
Mumbo Island epitomizes barefoot luxury, boasting a limited number of canopied tents nestled on rocks crafted from reeds, timber, thatch, and canvas. Immersed in the captivating aura of the 'lake of stars', the island offers seclusion, with activities centered around the diverse marine reserve.
Following a leisurely morning and a delightful breakfast, you'll embark on your journey back to the mainland aboard the dhow, departing at 09:30. Upon arrival, your private transfer to Kamazu International Airport awaits, with a travel time of approximately 3.5 hours.
