Overview

Experience unforgettable 12-Day Tanzania Group Safari -Machame-Route Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro, Tarangire adventure. When planning your Mount Kilimanjaro climb, it's crucial to consider the optimal times to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some insights to help you plan your expedition:

Best Climbing Periods:

  • January and February: These months offer warm temperatures and clear skies, making them ideal for climbing. The weather conditions are generally favorable, providing excellent visibility and comfortable trekking conditions.
  • August and September: Another great window for climbing Kilimanjaro, with relatively stable weather and pleasant temperatures. Clear skies during these months enhance the overall experience.

Avoiding Rainy Seasons:

  • March, April, and May: These months coincide with the long rainy season in Tanzania, making climbing challenging due to wet and slippery trails. It's best to avoid these months to minimize the risk of encountering heavy rainfall and muddy conditions.
  • November: While November can be wet, it's not consistently rainy every day. Climbing might still be possible during this month, but be prepared for occasional showers.
  • December: The weather in December can be unpredictable, with varying conditions. While climbing can be feasible, be ready for changing weather patterns and potential rain.

Temperature Considerations:

  • July: This month can be colder on Mount Kilimanjaro, so ensure you pack appropriate cold-weather gear, especially for higher altitudes where temperatures can drop significantly.
  • January and February: These months are among the warmest for climbing Kilimanjaro, offering comfortable conditions during the day and relatively warmer nights compared to other months.

By choosing the right time for your climb, such as during the recommended periods of January-February or August-September, you increase your chances of a successful and enjoyable ascent. Remember to consult with experienced guides and outfitters like Exodus Safaris, who can provide tailored advice and support to ensure a safe and memorable Kilimanjaro trek.

In the evening, if feasible, our guide will also have a brief meeting with you to provide essential information and insights. Please note that a transportation fee of $50 USD is applicable for the transfer from the airport to Moshi.

Day 02 Machame Gate - Machame Camp

After enjoying breakfast, our journey will commence at Machame Gate (1830m). As we progress, we'll traverse through the verdant expanse of Mount Kilimanjaro, ascending the lower slopes while immersing ourselves in the rich biodiversity of the rainforest.

Upon reaching the Machame Hut at an elevation of 3000m, weather permitting, we may catch a glimpse of the Kibo glacier if the evening sky is clear. The trek from Machame Gate to Machame Hut is expected to take approximately 6-7 hours on foot.

Day 03 Machame Camp - Shira Camp

Get ready for a moderate trek lasting four to six hours, which includes a steep ascent to a semicircular cliff called the picnic site. While ascending through the lower alpine moorland, you'll be treated to a charming display of wild alpine flowers. Upon reaching the summit, you'll reach Shira Camp, offering breathtaking vistas of Kibo Peak.

Day 04 Shira Camp - Barranco Valley

Join us for a delightful journey up the slopes of Kilimanjaro, where you can relish the breathtaking vistas that unfold along the southwestern side. As we proceed, we'll catch sight of the Lava Tower and reach the end of the Western Breach.

Following a delicious hot lunch at the Lava Tower's base (4,600m), we'll descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (3,900m). This leg of our adventure typically spans about five to seven hours of walking from Shira Camp.

Day 05 Baranco Camp - Barafu Camp

Our challenging ascent up the eastern face of the mountain leads us to the base of the Heim Glacier, offering breathtaking vistas of Kilimanjaro. From here, we continue toward the steep incline of the Great Barranco Wall and proceed toward the southern face of Kibo.

Descending the steep slopes brings us into the Karanga Valley, an austere alpine landscape of sand and dust. Here, we may pause for a delightful midday meal. Ascending from the Karanga Valley, we enjoy an easy walk on a compacted sand path, providing stunning views of the surrounding Karanga terrain.

Finally, we arrive at Barafu Camp, offering views of both Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak. Here, we rest and prepare for the impending summit attempt before an early bedtime. The journey from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (4,600m) typically takes anywhere from 7 to 9 hours.

Day 06 Barafu Camp - to Summit - Mweka Camp

As the darkness envelops the mountain, you'll awaken before dawn, ready to embark on a challenging ascent. Our journey will take us up steep volcanic slopes, navigating through zigzagging pathways until we reach Stella Point, perched at an elevation of 5,735 meters.

At Stella Point, we pause briefly to admire the sunrise illuminating the Mawenzi peak, a reward for our perseverance. For those still determined, a cautious two-hour trek leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Take a moment to reflect on your achievement before beginning the rapid descent to Barafu Camp, with a brief stop for rejuvenation.

Our descent continues until we reach Mweka Camp, marking the end of a 13-15 hour journey from Barafu to the summit and back to lower altitudes.

Day 7 Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate - Moshi

Join us for a relaxed walk through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where climbers will receive well-deserved certifications upon completing the ascent. Following a celebratory lunch at Mweka Gate, we'll drive back to Moshi for dinner and an overnight stay.

The trek from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate typically lasts between 3-5 hours on foot.

Day 08 Moshi - Lake Manyara National Park

Meet our experienced tour guide/chauffeur in the heart of Arusha city center and enjoy a detailed safari briefing. Following a delicious lunch at a nearby restaurant, we'll journey to Lake Manyara National Park for an extraordinary day of exploration.

Situated amidst the breathtaking western escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, the park boasts a stunning landscape dominated by a two-thirds expanse of a soaring soda lake. It's renowned for its large herds of elephants and the unique tree-climbing lions. Additionally, the park attracts numerous flamingos drawn to the abundant algae found in the lake.

Day 09 Lake Manyara National Park - Serengeti National Park

Begin your day bright and early with a 6 am breakfast, followed by an exhilarating game drive to the magnificent Serengeti National Park. This renowned park stands as one of Tanzania's largest, celebrated globally for its vast expanses of grassland plains and its rich diversity of wildlife. From the iconic wildebeest migration to the presence of hyenas, cheetahs, leopards, and lions, the Serengeti offers a captivating array of animal encounters.

The Grumeti River, within the park, hosts a thriving ecosystem including crocodiles, hippos, antelopes, giraffes, and gazelles. After a full day of exploration, indulge in a delightful dinner and retire for the night amidst the heart of the Serengeti.

Day 10 Serengeti National Park - Ngorongoro Crater

Begin your day with an exciting game drive in the Serengeti! Following this exhilarating experience, embark on a scenic drive to the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, with the option to make a stopover at Olduvai Gorge along the route.

For dinner and your overnight accommodation, settle in at Simba Camp, the sole communal campsite in the region, offering remarkable views of the crater floor. Please be aware that the facilities at this campsite may present challenges at times.

Day 11 Ngorongoro Crater - Tarangire National Park

Begin your day on a high note with a morning game drive at the Ngorongoro Crater. With some luck, you might catch sight of the Big Five—lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalos, and leopards.

Following your adventure, indulge in a delightful lunch at the scenic picnic site nestled on the crater floor before making your way back to Moshi in the afternoon.

Day 12 Tarangire National Park - to Moshi or Airport

Commence your day with an exhilarating game drive through Tarangire National Park. Afterward, in the afternoon, return either to Moshi or to the airport.
