Day 01 Dar es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve

Welcome to Tanzania and East Africa! Upon your arrival in Dar es Salaam, your travel guide will be ready to accompany you on your exclusive Southern Tanzania Safari. Our journey begins by heading south to the Selous Game Reserve, where our lodge awaits on the park's edge. Following a delightful lunch, we'll embark on an afternoon cruise along the Rufiji River.

Afterward, we'll return to the lodge for a tranquil evening by the campfire. Nestled amidst lush greenery, surrounded by the sights of hippos, crocodiles, and birds, your riverside lodge stay promises unforgettable moments.

Accommodations are provided at the Selous River Camp (or similar), and both lunch and dinner are included. Let the adventure begin!

Day 02 Selous Game Reserve

On the second day of our journey, we embark on an adventure through the expansive Selous Game Reserve aboard an open-top 4x4 vehicle, bringing along a packed lunch for the excursion. Spanning an area larger than Switzerland, this reserve is three times the size of Tanzania's renowned Serengeti National Park and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, remaining virtually untouched by human presence.

As we traverse the reserve, we encounter diverse habitats and vegetation, ranging from swamps to woodlands and riverside forests, pausing to observe the rich array of wildlife dwelling here. The Big Five, including elephants and buffalos, roam freely, while leopards remain elusive and rhinos are primarily found in the southern region of the reserve. Giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, wildebeest, and various antelope species thrive here, alongside a significant population of endangered African wild dogs, as well as other carnivores like spotted hyenas and jackals.

Impalas are a common sight, along with sable antelopes, puku, greater kudu, eland, Lichtenstein's hartebeest, bushbuck, oryx, waterbuck, duiker, klipspringer, and more.

We pause for a scenic picnic at a breathtaking viewpoint, soaking in the wild surroundings, before returning to the lodge along the enchanting Rufiji River. Throughout our excursion, we'll stay at the Selous River Camp, or a similar retreat, where all meals are included.

Day 03 Selous Game Reserve to Mikumi National Park

Early this morning, we set out to venture into the Selous Game Reserve. Accompanied by our knowledgeable guide, we head towards the north gate, eagerly scanning the surroundings for the diverse wildlife and bird species that call this area home. Following an enriching exploration of Selous, we continue our journey to Mikumi National Park, situated adjacent to the reserve.

Upon arrival in the afternoon, you'll have leisure time to unwind and bask in the tranquil ambiance, perhaps taking advantage of the refreshing pool at our accommodation near Mikumi National Park.

Accommodation: Tan Swiss Lodge (or similar)

Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 04 Mikumi National Park

On the fourth day of our thrilling 4x4 safari journey, we ventured into Mikumi National Park, an expansive reserve covering over 3,230 square kilometers and forming part of the vast Selous Ecosystem. Driving across the Mkata Plains, we encountered herds of herbivores grazing peacefully, while vigilant predators lurked nearby, creating a scene reminiscent of the iconic Serengeti Plains, complete with acacia and baobab trees.

Mikumi Park serves as a sanctuary for some of Africa's most majestic wildlife species, including elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards, wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, warthogs, crocodiles, various antelopes, endangered wild dogs, jackals, hyenas, hippos, baboons, and vervet monkeys.

Moreover, this region boasts a rich avian diversity, with more than 400 bird species identified, including yellow-throated long claws, lilac-breasted rollers, bateleur eagles, black-bellied bustards, guinea fowls, African fish eagles, marabou storks, oxpeckers, straw-tailed whydahs, and Boehm's bee-eaters.

As darkness enveloped the landscape, we made our way back to Tan Swiss Lodge near Mikumi for a delightful dinner and a well-deserved rest.

  • Accommodation: Tan Swiss Lodge (or similar)
  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 05-06 Mikumi to Ruaha National Park

Following breakfast on the fifth day, our journey to Ruaha National Park commences. This leg of the trip involves a 320km (200mi) drive, anticipated to take approximately five hours. Encompassing a vast expanse of 20,226 km² (7,809 mi²), Ruaha stands as Tanzania's largest national park. Despite its considerable size, Ruaha receives fewer visitors compared to other African game parks, rendering it an ideal choice for a more intimate safari experience.

Over the course of two days, we delve into the wilderness of Ruaha through 4x4 game drives. Renowned for its rich wildlife population, Ruaha is particularly celebrated for its impressive array of predators, boasting one of the highest lion populations globally. Expect sightings of cheetahs, African wild dogs, and elephants.

Furthermore, fortunate observers may catch glimpses of cape buffalos, giraffes, zebras, hippos, impala, and various antelope species, such as greater and lesser kudu, sable, and roan antelopes. This diverse array of flora and fauna is a consequence of the park's strategic location in a transitional zone between the southern and eastern ecological regions.

On the evenings of the fifth and sixth days, we will be accommodated in a fully-serviced mobile tent within the park. This immersive experience allows us to forge a deeper connection with nature, undisturbed by external distractions, offering an authentic taste of wilderness. Accommodation may vary depending on the season, either inside or in close proximity to Ruaha National Park. Your stay includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner, ensuring a comfortable and memorable sojourn.

Day 07 Ruaha National Park to the Udzungwa Mountains

On the seventh day of our Southern Tanzania Safari, we transition from Ruaha to the picturesque Udzungwa Mountains National Park. Upon arrival and settling into our lodge bordering the park, we embark on a journey to explore the tropical and mountain woodlands. This presents a unique chance to witness a myriad of birds, insects, and primates, as the park serves as a biodiversity sanctuary for numerous species.

Following our trek through the forest, we retreat to our rustic Hondo Hondo lodge, named after the Swahili word for 'hornbill'.

Day 08 Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Embarking on an exploration of the natural wonders nestled within the Udzungwa Mountains, we embark on a journey of discovery, immersing ourselves in the breathtaking landscapes while seeking out the diverse flora and fauna that call this area home. Our trek leads us to the magnificent Sanje Waterfall, boasting three tiers at heights of 30m, 70m, and 170m respectively.

As we wander through the verdant forest, we often encounter native wildlife. Baboons and vervet monkeys are commonly sighted, alongside two species unique to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park: the Iringa Red Colobus and the Sanje Crested Mangabey. The park hosts over 400 bird species, including several endemic to the Eastern Arc Mountains and four exclusive to this area.

Among the avian inhabitants are malachite and woodland kingfishers, Ruppell's vultures, silvery-cheeked and trumpeter hornbills. Furthermore, the park boasts over 2,500 plant species, with a quarter of them endemic to the region.

Accommodation is provided at the Udzungwa Forest Lodge or a similar establishment, with meals inclusive of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 09 Udzungwas to Dar es Salaam

Following a delightful breakfast at the forest lodge, we'll commence our journey back to Dar es Salaam. Our guide will ensure your safe transfer to your post-safari accommodation or directly to the airport, marking the conclusion of this private Southern Tanzania Safari. Meals provided will include breakfast and lunch.
