The Danakil Depression was formed through the gradual separation of the African and Arabian tectonic plates, which continue to drift apart at a rate of about 1 to 2 cm per year. This ongoing geological movement has created one of the most extreme and geologically active regions on Earth.
Often referred to as the “hottest place on the planet,” the Danakil Depression is famous for its otherworldly landscapes, including salt lakes, active lava lakes, volcanic formations, and vividly colored acidic hot springs. These features combine to create a surreal, almost alien environment shaped by constant volcanic and tectonic activity.
