3-Day Trip to Dankhill Depression

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you will take your domestic flight (ET110, 07:10–08:30) to Semera. On landing, you will be met by our representative and begin your journey into the spectacular Afar Region.

From Semera, you will drive deeper into the desert landscape to explore the world-famous Erta Ale Volcano, known for its active lava lake and intense geothermal activity. Along the way, you may experience the nomadic lifestyle of the Afar people, with stops for coffee and lunch prepared by your travel team.

The scenery gradually becomes more arid and dramatic, with sightings of local salt miners working in the desert plains. Lunch will be served in Dodom Village, where you will also receive the necessary permits and meet local scouts and camel handlers for the ascent.

From Dodom, you will begin an approximately 8.5 km trek (about 3 hours) toward the crater of Erta Ale. Camels will carry camping equipment and supplies to the rim of the volcano. You will then spend the night near the crater, witnessing the unforgettable glow and activity of one of the world’s most active lava lakes.

After a delicious early breakfast, you will depart for a journey to the extraordinary Dallol, passing through Asebo Salt Mine, also known as the “salt desert,” where the Afar people extract salt, cut it into blocks, and load it onto camel caravans that have operated for generations.

You will continue into the breathtaking Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and lowest places on Earth, with parts lying below sea level, reaching depths of around -116 meters near Lake Asale. The region is known for its extreme climate, unique geology, and intense volcanic activity.

Arriving in Dallol, you will explore a surreal landscape shaped by geothermal forces—colorful mineral formations, acidic hot springs, and salt structures that create a striking, almost otherworldly scenery. Often described as a “yellow moon-like kingdom,” Dallol offers one of the most unusual and visually stunning environments on the planet.

After breakfast, you will begin your drive back to Semera, enjoying the striking desert scenery and dramatic volcanic rock formations along the route through the Afar Region.

Upon arrival in Semera, you will proceed to the airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa. This marks the end of your journey, bringing your unforgettable adventure across Ethiopia’s desert landscapes to a close.
