4-Day Rwanda-Uganda Primates and Lake Bunyonyi Safari

You will be picked up by our driver-guide from Kigali Airport or your hotel and begin your journey with a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial. You will also visit the Presidential Museum, the former residence of two Rwandan Presidents, to gain insight into the country’s political history.

The tour continues through Kigali’s older commercial and residential areas before another meaningful stop at the genocide memorial site commemorating the 1994 tragedy. After lunch, you will proceed to Kinigi Park Headquarters for your overnight stay.

If time allows, you may also visit the scenic Twin Lakes—Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo—known for their deep blue waters, surrounding hills, waterfalls, and views of the Virunga volcanoes. Overnight at your booked hotel.

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the park headquarters at Kinigi Park Headquarters for a briefing starting at 7:00 am. You’ll join other trekkers and meet the ranger guide for a short orientation about the golden monkey activity and park guidelines.

At 8:00 am, you will transfer to the trailhead just outside Volcanoes National Park and begin your trek through the scenic bamboo forests. The terrain is relatively flat, offering beautiful views of the volcanic mountains as you search for the golden monkeys.

Once located, you’ll follow them as they feed and play, watching how they skillfully pick young bamboo shoots—and sometimes wander into nearby potato fields in search of food.

After an exciting one-hour encounter, you will return to the trailhead and drive back to your lodge for lunch. Later, you will proceed to the border crossing and continue your journey into Uganda, heading towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for your overnight stay.

After an early breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for a briefing on the guidelines for gorilla trekking. You will then proceed to the gorilla trail, where the trek may take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours—or even a full day—depending on the movement of the gorillas.

Once the gorilla family is located, you will spend up to one hour observing these incredible primates in their natural habitat. Since the duration of the trek is unpredictable, you will carry a packed lunch provided for you.

After the experience, you will transfer to Lake Bunyonyi, driving through the scenic southwestern Uganda countryside, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa” due to its cool climate and rolling hills. Lake Bunyonyi is one of the most beautiful lakes in the region, known as the second deepest lake in Africa at around 900 meters. It is also safe for swimming, being free of bilharzia.

After breakfast, you will enjoy a relaxing boat ride on Lake Bunyonyi, visiting its beautiful islands and taking in the stunning scenery.

Later, you will proceed to the Katuna border crossing to re-enter Rwanda. Upon arrival in Kigali, you will begin a city tour starting with a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, followed by exploration of key city landmarks and local craft markets.

After the tour, you will be transferred to Kigali International Airport or your hotel, marking the end of your journey.
