This comprehensive itinerary is designed to show you the diverse landscapes of Rwanda. Your 7-Day Rwanda Wild Safari, Akagera, Volcanoes & Lake Kivu includes a savannah safari in Akagera, world-renowned mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, and a relaxing lakeside retreat at Lake Kivu to unwind before heading back to Kigali.
Yes! Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah park and is home to lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo. On your 7-Day Rwanda Wild Safari, Akagera, Volcanoes & Lake Kivu, you will enjoy guided game drives and a boat safari on Lake Ihema to spot these majestic animals along with hippos and crocodiles.
Lake Kivu is all about relaxation and soft adventure. During this portion of your 7-Day Rwanda Wild Safari, Akagera, Volcanoes & Lake Kivu, you can enjoy a sunset boat cruise, visit the “swimming cows” of the islands, go kayaking, or take a guided tour of a local coffee plantation. It serves as the perfect “cool down” after the physical intensity of gorilla trekking.
Rwanda is known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” which makes for incredibly scenic but winding drives. Generally, it takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to get from Kigali to Akagera, about 5 hours from Akagera to Volcanoes, and 1.5 to 2 hours from Volcanoes to Lake Kivu. Your 7-Day Rwanda Wild Safari, Akagera, Volcanoes & Lake Kivu is paced to ensure you spend more time exploring than sitting in a vehicle.
You will experience two distinct environments. For the savannah of Akagera, pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat. For the rainforest of Volcanoes, you’ll need waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, and a rain jacket. This variety is part of what makes the 7-Day Rwanda Wild Safari, Akagera, Volcanoes & Lake Kivu so unique!
Most nationalities can obtain a 30-day tourist visa on arrival for $50 USD. If you are planning to visit neighboring Uganda or Kenya as well, you might consider the East Africa Tourist Visa ($100 USD). We recommend checking the latest entry requirements 30 days before starting your 7-Day Rwanda Wild Safari, Akagera, Volcanoes & Lake Kivu.
