Located to the south of Nairobi, the Amboseli National Park is one of the most popular parks in the country. A large part of the park is formed by an old lakebed, and there are very sparse and vulnerable grasslands with rare acacia growing in some areas. There are also several small eroded and rocky volcanic hills in the southern region. It is the park that has the biggest herds of elephants and this makes it the best place to be if one wants to get a close view of these animals. For example, there is an extensive prospect of Mount Kilimanjaro stretching across the border of Kenya and Tanzania. It also has a large area which is covered by Amboseli Lake although this lake dries up in the dry season apart from the periods of raining. The park has a remarkably diverse bird population, with at least 634 recorded species.
