FAQs
This 11 days safari across Rwanda, Kenya, and the Masai Mara is a splendid odyssey that is bound to leave tourist with cherished memories of the works of nature and man. You will be taken on a thrilling trek through the Volcanoes National Park to visit the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. In Kenya, you will discover famous national parks like Lake Nakuru National Park and Amboseli National Park and you will be able to see vast herds of elephants, flamingo and other fauna. The final destination is the Masai Mara which is one of the most popular safari destinations in Africa due to the lions, the annual migration (depending on the time of year) and the Maasai people and they way of life.
Indeed, gorilla trekking in Rwanda and seeing the Rwanda Gorillas in Volcanoes National Park does require a permit. The Rwanda Development Board (RDB) is the authority issuing the permits, which should be arranged beforehand as they are highly sought after. The cost of each permit is about 100 dollars for each individual and includes one hour with the gorilla family accompanied by professional trackers. The best thing is that your tour operator will often organize the permit as part of the trip to make it easier for you as a tourist. Hiring the service should be done in advance, preferably during high season, if possible, to assure yourself of a glimpse of these marvelous primates.
I would recommend an 11 days Rwanda Gorillas, Kenya, and Maasai Mara experience during the dry seasons of June to October and December to February. These months afford the best trekking conditions in the Rwandan side of the park, especially because, the trails are not slippery as they can be in the other months. In terms of the viewing of animals, the best time I can recommend for a visitor to visit Kenya is during the dry season as animals are easily spotted due to their tendency to cluster around water sources. To see the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara, ideally visit in July to October because millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya in search of pastures.
While on the safari, you could use hotels, lodges, and tents/ranches, and mid-range and/or low-end accommodation types depending on your taste. One can also spend a night in eco-lodge accommodation or luxury hotels with stunning vistas of the Rwandan rainforest around the Volcanoes National Park. Lodges that tourists find in Amboseli and Lake Nakuru afford both breathtaking views and comfort in Kenya. Luxury accommodation at the Masai Mara follows a diversity with options ranging from luxury tented camps with verandahs that overlook the grasslands to simple camps that place you right in the thick of the wild. As you will see from the options below, all the abodes offer great hospitality and an opportunity to unwind after fun-filled days.
This particular safari is remarkable for the range of wild animals experiences it provides. The main attraction in Rwanda is the mountain gorillas but you have a chance to see the Golden monkeys, forest elephants and different types of birds in the Volcanoes National Park. Kenya holds Lake Nakuru that is famous for the pink flamingos, rhinos and leopards while Amboseli is famous for large elephant herds like Mount Kilimanjaro. There are also other other attractions like the big five which includes lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalos, Cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and many more especially during the season of Great migration. Hunting the big five and other wild animals there is made very easy by the availability of many destinations with so much variation in wildlife.
Regional energetic requirement also fluctuates with the activities of the safari. Trekking to see the gorillas is not easy because the move involves walking in steep and dense forests of Volcanoes National Park for several hours at times. All the participants should be in good state of health since the task involves a lot of hiking and a porter can assist during the trekking. In Kenya, the safari is not very strenuous as most parts require game viewing done in 4×4 vehicles thus making it easier to travel around in the parks. However, there are activities such as nature walks or cultural visits where one gets to interact with the Maasai may involve moderate walking. It may be useful to wear good hiking boots, suitable clothes, and undergo some physical exercises before the trip.
