This tour is a premier cross-border experience. The 5-Day Uganda Gorilla and Rwanda Golden Monkey Trek Tour features the “primate double” of the Albertine Rift: tracking the rare and vibrant golden monkeys in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the legendary mountain gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
This itinerary offers the best of both worlds. By tracking golden monkeys in Rwanda and gorillas in Uganda, the 5-Day Uganda Gorilla and Rwanda Golden Monkey Trek Tour takes advantage of the shorter drive times from Kigali to the volcanic range while utilizing the more affordable Ugandan gorilla permit ($800) compared to the Rwandan permit ($1,500)
Located in Kinigi, the Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge serves as your gateway to the golden monkeys. During your stay, you will enjoy well-designed natural rooms with private balconies overlooking the Karisimbi volcano. It is ideally positioned just 20 minutes from the park headquarters, ensuring a smooth start to your trek.
The transfer between the two parks is a scenic “cross-border” journey that typically takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on border formalities at the Cyanika or Katuna crossing. This ensures you spend more time enjoying the wildlife and less time in the vehicle.
Yes. For the 5-Day Uganda Gorilla and Rwanda Golden Monkey Trek Tour, the East Africa Tourist Visa ($100 USD) is the best option. It allows for multiple entries between Rwanda and Uganda, making the border transit seamless. You should apply for this via the Rwandan immigration website before arrival.
Absolutely. At the park headquarters for both treks, you can hire a local porter for approximately $15–$25. Hiring a porter is a direct way to support the local community while making your 5-Day Uganda Gorilla and Rwanda Golden Monkey Trek Tour much more physically manageable.
