Saadani National Park is a unique combination of both a coastal and an inland ecosystem. Situated in the Tanga region of Tanzania, this park stretches along the Indian ocean and houses a wide variety of animal species including zebra, wildebeest, hippos, elephants, buffalo, giraffe and wild dog. Its mangrove forests and diverse birdlife are also home to some of the rarest species in the world like the critically endangered pink backed pelican and the crested sarus crane. The easiest way to reach Saadani National Park is by air, followed by road. The nearest airports are Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar. From there, it’s a five-hour drive or bus ride to get to the park. If traveling by road, you can also choose to stay in nearby towns such as Mkata and Kilwa, which can serve as a great base for day trips and safaris.
Saadani offers a variety of activities to tourists, ranging from game viewing to bird watching and boat rides. During this time, the animals become concentrated around the water sources, making it easier to spot them, while the weather is dry, sunny and cooler. It’s also the most comfortable time to travel due to the lack of humidity.
